Step 2 – Run and install spice-guest-toolsĪfter the file is available on your Windows Guest, run and install the program. If you have no internet, you can download the file on a device with internet, then transfer it to your Windows Guest using USB storage which sadly won’t be covered here.
Or easier, shortened URL: In my case, I opened the link on my Windows Guest, but internet is required for that. Open the download page ( ) on your Windows Guest, scroll down a bit until you found Windows binaries under Guest, click the Windows guest tools link to start the download. (Updated as 26th Oct) Step 1 – Download spice-guest-tools to Windows Guest It should be working for any SPICE remote viewer too such as Cockpit (tested). I am writing this tutorial based on virt-manager. The key to this tutorial is, install spice -guest-tools and Spice WebDAV daemon. I started with virt-manager and had no clipboard sharing enabled. It is quite confusing when you first started.
I am currently running Ubuntu 20.04 as the Host and Windows 10 as the Guests. Main reason why I wanted to try because I want to move away from VirtualBox that I can never enable folder sharing, and VMWare which is paid. I found people talking about Qemu/KVM on Reddit, so I decided to try. So here am I sharing the complete guide for you guys.
Its free for personal use and supports things like DirectX 11/12, has full USB 3.0 support etc.4.7 Step 7 – Verify the Folder Sharing is workingĬlipboard and folder sharing are usually an important feature to have when we run virtual machines. My opinion, if you want the best virtualization experience on Windows go download VMware Player. Add-on to that Oracle splits off what most would consider basic functionality (eg USB2/USB3 support, NVME) into an Extension Pack and license it separately from VirtualBox, which is just stupid. Even enabling 3D acceleration is a hacky experience requiring you to boot to safe mode in Windows and replace system files. Is ridiculous that its 2021 and 3d acceleration hasn't advanced past basic DirectX 8/9 support. Virtualbox is great for basic virtualization usage but I tend to agree with whoever told you it was 'crap' as Virtualbox is really feels like it hit a brick wall in terms of development.
Its just the previous poster said, not polished, and there are long running issues that still warrant that "experimental software" software warning you pointed out (Eg HAXM doesn't run on Windows 10 Home). Qemu actually works really well on Windows. V2P - The opposite, usually done when you are having an issue with a VM or management decides to nix virtual machines for some insane reason
